Giles Landscapes employees are a talented bunch you know! Especially a certain maintenance manager called Gary Evison! Little did his work mates know that underneath that calm and professional exterior, beats the heart of a competitive athelete... and we thought it was about time that people knew about it!
Back in September the British Inline Skating Championships took place at the Tatem Park stadium in Enfield and Gary won Bronze for his efforts in the senior 5000m relay along with his two team mates all from the Belotti Wisbech skating Club. This was the first championship Gary has skated in after only returning to the sport in February this year after a break of fifteen years. He is hoping to continue entering competitions and championships - the next one being in March of next year.
In-line skating has become very popular in the Fens with the Winters becoming warmer, the traditional sport of ice speed skating that originally took place on the frozen fields has had to evolve and many of the older ice skaters have taken to in line skating as a way of keeping the sport alive. The sport is also now attracting younger people and becoming increasingly popular with clubs springing up all over the country.
There is now even hope for in-line skating to become an Olympic event - unfortunately not in time for the next Olympics but there are plans if all goes well to see in-line speed skating making its Olympic debut in 2016!
