The Wildfowl and Wetland Trust based at Welney are holding a Fenland Culture day called The Fen Tigers Tail on Sunday 1st June to celebrate all aspects of Fen Life.
We will be there with a stand especially created for the event demonstrating how even the smallest gardens can be havens for wildlife - there will be easy to replicate ideas on how you can bring more wildlife into your garden and myself and Steve will be on hand to give advice about native planting and nectar rich plants.
We will also have a plant stall where we swap you a plant for a donation - you give us a donation - you choose a plant (or 2) in return all money raised will go to the Macmillan Cancer Support charity.
So what's it all about then - well - the weekend kicks off with a Fen Tiger Trail on Saturday the 31st May and continues on Sunday the 1st June with the Fen Tiger's Tail where you can meet the colourful characters of the Fens (and believe me - they are colourful!) at a celebration of the Fen Tiger's lives.
If you're wondering what a Fen Tiger is - it was the name given to Fen folk who lived and worked in the Fens way back when the land was originally drained in the 17th century. the descendents of these people still keep alive the old traditions and crafts of the Fen Tigers and have kept the name going right up to the present day.
Some of these traditions and crafts will be demonstrated on the Sunday including Molly dancing, decoy carving, eel trap making along with local food tasting (hopfully no eels - yuck!) and all this amongst the beautiful setting of the Wetland centre that is renowned throughout Britain!
So come along to celebrate this unique region's heritage and say hello! And the more money we can raise for Macmillan Cancer support, the better!
We look forward to seeing you there!
Jane :)
